Aim of the course

The course aims to provide thorough practical and theory training in operating a Mobile Elevating Work Platform. This enables the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Course Content

  •  Identify the basic construction, purpose and function of components and the purpose and use of controls and gauges
  •  Identify and comply with manufacturers’ instructions in accordance with the operator’s handbook, other information sources and applicable legislation
  • Carry out pre-checks
  • Ensure the mast climber is sited and erected
  • Keep within safe working parameters
  • Place the plant machinery in an out-of-service condition
  • Prepare the platform to accept various loads
  •  Raise and lower platform up to maximum working height in a loaded and unloaded state

The A27 MEWP Mast Climber course is aimed at people who require a formal qualification for operating a MEWP.

Course Overview

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as a plant operator
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Check the stability, alignment and safety before use
  • Check that platform protection is in position before use
  • Check that all gates and safety devices function according to specification
  • Check the capacity of the mast climber will accommodate expected loads and/or passengers
  • Undertake all pre-use checks and running checks
  • Check emergency lowering functions
  • Explain precautions to be taken for overhead services and other hazards
  • Load and unload materials following manual handling requirements
  • Prepare the platform for the required load(s) and/or passengers
  • Operate the mast climber to the limits of operation both loaded and unloaded
  • Comply with signals and instructions
  • Explain mast climber working limitations
  • Place the mast climber in an out-of-service condition, isolate and secure

Entry Requirements

To be able to enter and complete this course  you must have the following contents with you.

  • NI Number
  • Existing CSCS Card Number
  • Valid ID
  • In-date CITB HS&E Touch Screen Test*
  • Understanding to be able to read, write and speak English to a good level

*Candidates MUST have in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Touch Screen Test which has been completed within two years of the course examination date. 

Testing

Mixture of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises, followed by one day assessment. 

Qualification

Successful candidate will receive a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card on passing the CPCS technical tests. The card is valid for two years and for the availability to upgrade to Blue CPCS Card upon the completion of an NVQ Level 2 within the two years.
