A26 MEWP – BOOM

Aim of the course

The course aims to provide thorough practical and theory training in operating a Mobile Elevating Work Platform. This enables the candidate to competently and safely carry out the role and pass the CPCS Theory and Practical Tests.

Course Content

  • To understand the Job Role of a MEWP Boom Operator.
  • Pre-Start Checks on the Machine.
  • Correct Start-Up Produces on the Machine.
  • Full functional Checks on the Machine.
  • Configure the Machine ready for Safe operations.
  • To Safely Operate travel over inclines on level surfaces.
  • Check and understand the emergency lowering functions.
  • Correct and safe manoeuvring in confined spaces.
  • Configure and MEWP Boom for accessing duties.
  • Position the platform to access a work location.
  • Access working locations up to full operating height.
  • To Understand the Underground, Overhead Services and surrounding Hazards.
  • To understand the Safe Working areas.
  • Correct Shutdown and Locking Procedures of the Machine.
  • Correct Loading & Unloading procedures for Machine Transportation.

Who Should Attend

The A26 course is aimed at people who require a formal qualification for operating a MEWP Boom.

Course Overview

  • Describe the nature of the sector of industry and their role and responsibilities as an access operator
  • Name and explain the purpose of principal components, the basic construction, controls and terminology
  • Conform with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s handbook, other types of information source and relevant regulations and legislation
  • Undertake all pre-use checks
  • Check emergency lowering functions
  • Configure and set for site travel
  • Travel over level surfaces (all types) and uneven terrain (self-propelled units only)
  • Explain travel procedures and precautions on inclines
  • Manoeuvre in confined spaces
  • Configure and set for accessing duties
  • Position the platform to access a work position
  • Explain actions required for hazards, underground and overhead services
  • Access working points up to full operating height and reach
  • Travel with a raised platform (relevant endorsement)
  • Prepare the crane in preparation of movement from lifting duties
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures

Entry Requirements

To be able to enter and complete this course  you must have the following contents with you.

  • NI Number
  • Existing CSCS Card Number
  • Valid ID
  • In-date CITB HS&E Touch Screen Test*
  • Understanding to be able to read, write and speak English to a good level

*Candidates MUST have in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Touch Screen Test which has been completed within two years of the course examination date. 

Testing

Mixture of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises, followed by one day assessment. 

Qualification

Successful candidate will receive a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card on passing the CPCS technical tests. The card is valid for two years and for the availability to upgrade to Blue CPCS Card upon the completion of an NVQ Level 2 within the two years.
