Aim of the course

To provide thorough theoretical and practical training in operating a telehandler to enable the candidate to competently and safely operate the machine and pass the CPCS Telescopic Handler training course Theory and Practical Tests.

Course content

  • Operate the machine for all normal tasks 
  • Decide whether a particular load is safe to lift
  • Carry out routine servicing procedures and maintenance as necessary, in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
  • Know how the machine works and the maintenance requirements involved
  • The purpose and capabilities of the machine and any relevant safety precautions necessary for its operation
  • Understand the effect of load, size, weight, gradients and ground conditions upon machine stability
    Know how to load, store and transport representative materials
    Understand the basic construction of pallets

Course Overview

  • Deciding whether a particular load is safe to lift
  • The permitted loading of scaffolds
  • Operating the plant machinery on all normal tasks for which it is designed
  • How the handler machine works and the maintenance requirements involved
  • Conducting minor mechanical adjustments
  • Preparing and driving the machine on public highways, and loading in onto a transporter in accordance with the requirements of the UK Road Traffic Acts
  • Carrying out routine telescopic handler servicing procedures and plant maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Understanding the purpose and capabilities of the machine and any relevant safety precautions necessary for its operation

  • Lift and remove various loads up to full extension and working height of the telehandler

  • Explain how stability is affected by travelling with a raised boom and a suspended load (both regular and irregular)
  • Explain visibility issues and restrictions and with suspended loads
  • Place loads out of sight of the operator
  • Maintain safe working situations
  • Carry out shut down and securing procedures
  • Explain the loading and unloading procedures for machine transporting

Entry Requirements

To be able to enter and complete this course  you must have the following contents with you.

  • NI Number
  • Existing CSCS Card Number
  • Valid ID
  • In-date CITB HS&E Touch Screen Test*
  • Understanding to be able to read, write and speak English to a good level

*Candidates MUST have in-date CITB Health, Safety and Environment Touch Screen Test which has been completed within two years of the course examination date. 

Testing

Mixture of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises, followed by one day assessment. 

Qualification

Successful candidate will receive a Red CPCS Trained Operator Card on passing the CPCS technical tests. The card is valid for two years and for the availability to upgrade to Blue CPCS Card upon the completion of an NVQ Level 2 within the two years.
